An Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

is a device used to administer an electric shock to a patient in SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST.

 

But how does an AED know when to shock a patient?

 

Modern Defibrillators (AEDs) are fully automatic and can be used by people without prior medical training.

The probability that an AED will shock a "live" patient

(heartbeat present) is actually very low.

With two chest pads, an AED (Defibrillator) is placed on the patient. These pads are placed as shown on the AED screen or on a diagram.

The chest contacts allow the machine to deliver

an electrical shock to the heart muscle.

They also act as "sensors" and allow the device (AED)

To record and interpret the electrical activity of the heart.

If the device (Defibrillator) senses electrical activity that indicates the person has a heartbeat, it will not deliver a shock.

 

AEDs are therefore very safe as they only deliver a shock when needed.
